Golden Eagles Settle For A Doubleheader Split

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team ran its winning streak to eight with a win in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, but that streak came to an end in the nightcap.

After the Golden Eagles took the opener, 12-7, behind 14 hits and some outstanding relief from Anthony Diaz, their bats were silenced in the second game by Sonoma State's Michael Panici, who tossed a three-hit shutout in a 4-0 decision.

Cal State LA (16-13, 13-6 CCAA) remains in first place by percentage points over Cal State Dominguez Hills. Sonoma State (8-23, 5-18 CCAA) picked up its first road win of the season thanks to Panici's shutout.

The Golden Eagles got the day off to a good start, adding 14 hits and 12 runs to the 19 hits and 17 runs they picked up in Friday's series opener. Isaiah Marquez went 2-for-5 with four RBI, Ben Lee was 3-for-6 with three RBI, Cesar Chavez was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Alberto Prado hit a solo home run.

Lino Zepeda went the first four innings for the Golden Eagles and allowed seven hits and six runs. He walked three and struck out seven. Diaz entered the game in the fifth inning and gave up only two hits and an unearned run over the final five innings. He walked four and struck out one and improved to 3-0 on the season.

After Bryson McArn hit a two-run home run to give Sonoma State a 2-0 lead, he added a two-run double in the third to give the Seawolves a 4-1 advantage. Even Merz delivered a two-run single in the top of the fourth to make it 6-2 before the Golden Eagles rallied for five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Prado started the inning with a solo home run and the Golden Eagles loaded the bases before Kai Penuelas reached on an error as Chavez scored to make it 6-4. Marquez then singled in two to tie the game and a run-scoring single by Ben Lee gave the Golden Eagles a 7-6 lead.

Cal State LA added a run in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Lee to make it 8-6 and, after the Seawolves got an unearned run in the seventh to make it 8-7, the Golden Eagles scored four times in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 12-7. Javy Espinoza and Carson Panarisi doubled in runs, while Marquez picked up two RBI on an infield single with two outs.

The Golden Eagles were unable to muster any offense in the nightcap against Panici. Lee picked up a two-out single up the middle for the Golden Eagles' first hit, Ethan Gonzalez singled up the middle with two outs in the sixth and Carson Panarisi singled with one out in the seventh, but that was it. Espinoza walked and took second on a failed pickoff attempt in the fourth, but was the only Golden Eagle to reach second.

Cal State LA's Brandon Gutierrez, coming off his no-hitter last week at Cal Poly Pomona, went six strong innings on Saturday. He gave up a two-run home run in the first inning to Merz, a run-scoring single to Ben Saitz in the second and a solo home run to Garret Barto in the sixth.

Gutierrez walked two and struck out one in his six innings of work. Jonathan Manuel pitched a hitless seventh inning for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will conclude the series with Sonoma State on Sunday at noon.
