Golden Eagles Fly High After Late Marquez Blast

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team enjoyed some late dramatics Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association series finale against Sonoma State.

The Golden Eagles tied the game with an unearned run in the eighth inning and then won it in the ninth on a game-winning two-run home run from Isaiah Marquez, 8-6. Cal State LA (17-13, 14-6 CCAA) took three games in the four-game series against Sonoma State (8-24, 5-19 CCAA).

Marquez hit his fourth home run of the season as he continues his climb from a slow start to the season that saw him hitting just .179 entering conference play. He's hit safely in 15 of Cal State LA's 20 conference games with eight multi-hit games and looks more like the player who earned All-West Region and All-CCAA last season in his first year with the program.

Javy Espinoza also had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI. He hit a two-run home run in the second inning to break a nine-inning scoreless stretch for the Golden Eagles.

Ethan Gonzalez had two hits and two runs scored, Kai Penuelas went 2-for-4 and Kadyn Victorian reached base three times, including a key hit-by-pitch that opened the ninth inning and set the stage for Marquez.

AJ Moreno had a strong outing on the mound for the Golden Eagles, allowing only five hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings. Joel Martinez and Atticus Gonzalez combined to get the next three outs and freshman Ismael Quintero pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win and improve to 4-0 on the season.

Garret Barto went 2-for-4 with a double and home run for the Seawolves, while Chris Ortiz was 2-for-5 and Shane Callison went 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Barto doubled to left to drive in Sonoma State's first run in the first inning and, after Espinoza put the Golden Eagles ahead 2-1 with a two-run home run in the second, Barto was at it again with a solo home run in the fourth that tied the game.

Penuelas picked up an infield single in the fifth and a throwing error allowed Bryan Nunez to score to make it 3-2 in the fifth, but Callison and Gabriel Tapia delivered RBI singles to put the Seawolves ahead, 4-3, in the sixth. A sacrifice fly by Cesar Chavez that drove in Ben Lee tied it in the bottom of the inning and a run-scoring triple by Espinoza gave the Golden Eagles a 5-4 lead.

The Seawolves took the lead right back in the seventh on a pair of bases-loaded walks to forced in runs, but Cal State LA took advantage of a throwing error in the eighth that allowed Ethan Gonzalez to score and tie the game at 6-6.

After Quintero worked around a two-out double in the top of the ninth, Victorian was hit by a pitch and Marquez hit a pitch - over the left-field fence - in the bottom of the inning to win it for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday in the opener of a four-game series at Cal State East Bay.
