Golden Eagles Win A Wild One In Pomona

POMONA -- Cal State LA's baseball team prevailed in a wild one Friday night in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles roared to a 13-5 lead and then held on for a 13-12 win over the Broncos at Scolinos Field. Cal State LA (11-12, 8-5 CCAA) was saved by freshman Ismael Quintero, who earned a much-deserved save after getting the final five outs. Quintero came on with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning and got out of the jam unscathed and then he finished the game with the tying and winning runs on base for his second save of the season.

Every starter collected at least one hit for the Golden Eagles, who had a season-high 20 in the game, including a home run from Ben Lee and doubles from Malik Clayton, Isaiah Marquez and Cesar Chavez. Lee, who previously played at Cal Poly Pomona, was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI in his return to Scolinos Field. Chavez was 3-for-4 with four RBI and Marquez was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Anthony Gibbons went 5-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI for Cal Poly Pomona (8-18, 5-12 CCAA).

Cal State LA had an early 9-1 lead, but after taking a 13-5 lead in the top of the sixth, the Golden Eagles were blanked over the final three innings while Cal Poly Pomona staged its comeback.

Alejandro Huezo earned the first win of his Cal State LA career after pitching the first six innings for the Golden Eagles. He allowed 11 hits and four earned runs with two walks and six strikeouts. A dropped fly ball led to four unearned runs in the fourth.

Chavez delivered a run-scoring single in the first inning for Cal State LA and, after the Broncos tied it with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, the Golden Eagles took the lead for good with four runs in the second to take the lead for good. Clayton doubled in two runs, Marquez doubled in a run and Chavez singled in another run for a 5-1 lead.

A run-scoring single by Marquez, a two-run double by Chavez and a run-scoring groundout by Javy Espinoza made it 9-1 in the fourth.

After the Broncos scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 9-5, the Golden Eagles got a two-run home run from Lee in the fifth and a sacrifice fly by Espinoza and a run-scoring single by Kai Penuelas in the sixth to make it 13-5.

Johnny Pappas hit a two-run home run as part of a three-run sixth inning for the Broncos and a wild pitch made it 13-9 in the seventh. Then, after Gibbons had a run-scoring double and Robbie Treto singled in a pair of runs to make it 13-12, Quintero was summoned with the bases loaded and one out. He got a fielder's choice grounder with first baseman Alberto Prado getting the out at home to preserve the lead. Quintero then got the final out of the inning via strikeout.

In the ninth, the Broncos got the tying run to second base with one out, but Quintero got a foul out and, after intentionally walking Gibbons, got the final out on a fly out to end it.

The series will continue on Saturday with a doubleheader in Pomona starting at 2 p.m.
