Brandon Gutierrez Tosses A No-Hitter At Pomona

POMONA -- Cal State LA's Brandon Gutierrez put an emphatic end to a long doubleheader that was otherwise dominated by offense.

Gutierrez, taking the mound shortly after Cal State LA won the opener of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader in 14 innings, tossed a no-hitter in the nightcap to lead the Golden Eagles to a 7-1 victory and a Saturday sweep at Scolinos Field. Gutierrez worked around three errors and four walks to record the program's first no-hitter since Isaac Morales threw one against San Francisco State in 2007. The no-hitter is the fifth in program history.

Cal State LA (13-12, 10-5 CCAA) took the opener, 11-9, in 14 innings.

In the first two games of the series, Cal Poly Pomona scored 21 runs on 33 hits, but Gutierrez didn't allow one in his best start of a sensational sophomore season. Gutierrez pitched sparingly last season as a freshman out of the bullpen, but he's been phenomenal as a starter this year. He's now 4-1 in six starts this season with three complete games. Only an unearned run in the first inning on Saturday prevented his second shutout of the season.

The Golden Eagles actually trailed in the nightcap, 1-0, after Cal Poly Pomona leadoff batter Johnny Pappas reached on an error, took second on a wild pitch, reached third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Marco Malerbo.

Cal State LA tied the game at 1-1 in the third on a solo home run from Isaiah Marquez and scored three times in the fourth to stake Gutierrez to a nice lead. Carson Panarisi singled in the go-ahead run and Kadyn Victorian delivered a two-run double to make it 4-1.

Victorian added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1 in the sixth and a sacrifice fly by Cesar Chavez and a run-scoring double by Panarisi completed the scoring.

Gutierrez issued a pair of one-out walks in the second, but got the final two batters of the inning via strikeout. He retired the side in order in the third inning and worked around a leadoff error and a two-out walk in the fourth. He retired the side in order in the fifth and got a ground out to end the inning after a two-out walk in the sixth.

With the no-hitter clearly in site, Gutierrez got a ground out before a one-out infield error gave the Broncos a base runner. Gutierrez, though, quickly got the second out on a shallow fly to left and completed his gem with a grounder to Javy Espinoza at second for the final out.

A no-hitter was in sharp contrast to the opener, which saw the teams battle for 14 innings before Cal State LA pulled out an 11-9 win. The Golden Eagles got some clutch pitching in the opener as well as Atticus Gonzalez, Anthony Diaz and Ismael Quintero combined for seven scoreless innings of relief after Cal Poly Pomona rallied from a 9-3 deficit to force extra innings.

Lino Zepeda allowed nine hits and three runs over five innings in a solid start.

Alberto Prado went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, while Carson Panarisi went 2-for-6 with three RBI and Espinoza went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Ben Lee scored three runs, while Ethan Gonzalez and Chavez scored two runs each.

Cal State LA erased an early 2-0 deficit with a six-run rally in the fifth. Gonzalez drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Golden Eagles on the board and Chavez was hit by a pitch to force in a run to tie it. Espinoza then singled in a pair of runs, Kai Penuelas followed with a sacrifice fly and Marquez singled in a run to make it 6-2.

Panarisi singled in a pair of runs in the sixth to make it 8-2 and Gonzalez drove in a run with a groundout in the seventh to give the Golden Eagles a 9-3 lead.

The Broncos, though, scored three times in the seventh and three times in the eighth to tie it.

Gonzalez allowed only one hit in his three innings of relief and Anthony Diaz allowed two hits over his three scoreless innings to pick up his second win of the season. Quintero got the final three outs for his second save of the series.

The four-game series will conclude on Sunday with a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
