LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team battled admirably against perennial power Hawaii Pacific in a regional match on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles had competitive matches across the board in a 6-1 loss to the Sharks at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (1-5) dropped the doubles point that could have gone either way and played in a pair of three-set tiebreakers in singles.
Maldini Simic picked up the lone point for the Golden Eagles at No. 1 singles, prevailing in a 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 decision over Evi Roobal.
Hideka Takamura also had a three-set match at No. 2 singles, dropping a hard-fought decision to Sayda Hernandez, 6-3, 5-7, 10-4.
Sarah Olmos fell at No. 3 singles to Emily Castillo, 6-0, 6-4,
Lea Rolland fell to Jayanne Palma at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2,
Courtlyn Lam fell to Annika Hakovirta, 7-6, 6-4 and
Charlotte Downs fell to Rosa Viller Moller, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
Olmos and Takamura fell in a tight battle at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, to Castillo and Roobal and
Summer Roybal and Rolland fell at No. 3 doubles, 6-0, to Lynn Kader and Palma. Simic and Lam were locked in a tight battle at No. 2 doubles against Hernandez and Hakovirta, trailing 4-3, when the doubles point was clinched.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with a match at Hope International at noon. The Golden Eagles' next home match is set for next Sunday, March 9, against Stanislaus State at 11 a.m.
