LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team was unable to post an upset win over Point Loma on Tuesday, but the match wasn't without some entertaining matchups.
The top two singles positions went to third-set super tiebreakers in Point Loma's 6-1 win at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA picked up its lone point at No. 1 singles where
Maldini Simic, on her birthday, outlasted Alina Kupfer of Point Loma, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-3. While that match was going on, the No. 2 singles match between Cal State LA's
Sofia Pavlova and Arianna Audelo also went to a tiebreaker, which was won by Audelo, 6-2, 3-6, (15-13).
Cal State LA (1-8) dropped the doubles point in a close decision and fell in straight sets in four of the six singles contests.
No. 36 Point Loma (9-2) won its seventh straight match.
Pavlova and Simic dropped a tight 6-4 decision at No. 1 doubles to Audelo and Quin Brady and
Courtlyn Lam and
Summer Roybal fell at No. 3 doubles to Anna Pallencaoe and Antonia Barth, 6-2.
Sarah Olmos and
Hideka Takamura were locked in a tight battle at No. 2 doubles, trailing, 5-4, when the doubles point was decided.
Takamura fell to Barth, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, Olmos fell to Brady in a tight match, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, Lam fell to Emely Valencia at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and Roybal fell to Pallencaoe at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
The big drama in the match came side-by-side on the courts of the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches. Pavlova fought back nicely to force a third-set tiebreaker after dropping the first set, 6-1, She won the second set, 6-4, and played well in the tiebreaker before the tight loss.
At the same time, Simic also battled back nicely after dropping the first set, 6-2. She battled back to take the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3) and then jumped out to a quick lead in the third-set tiebreaker, taking that, 10-3.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with another home match, this one against Concordia, at 11 a.m.
