LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team came up short in a competitive match Sunday against Colorado Mesa.
The Golden Eagles dropped a hotly-contested doubles point and then managed two singles wins in a 5-2 loss to the Mavericks at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (1-7) got wins at No. 1 singles from
Maldini Simic and at No. 4 singles from
Sarah Olmos.
Colorado Mesa (7-8) improved to 1-1 on its lengthy road trip in California.
The doubles point was decided abruptly when all three matches ended literally within a minute or two of each other.
Courtlyn Lam and
Summer Roybal fell at No. 3 doubles, 6-3, just before Simic and Sofia Pavolova won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3. At almost the same time, Makenna Livingston and Delia Maier of Colorado Mesa closed out a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Olmos and
Hideka Takamura.
Simic got the Golden Eagles on the board with an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 33 Makenna Livingston at No. 1 singles and Olmos won a three-set battle over Maier at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
Takamura was involved in the match of the day at No. 3 singles, falling in a three-set marathon to Jade Brilante, 6-2, 6-7, 10-7. Takamura won the second-set tiebreaker, 10-8, to send the match to a deciding third-set tiebreaker, which Brilante won, 10-7.
Pavlova, returning to Cal State LA's lineup, fell at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1 to Devyn Rodriguez,
Charlotte Downs fell to C. Ballon Marin at No. 5 singles, 6-1,, 6-1, and
Courtlyn Lam fell at Nol. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a home match against Point Loma.
