MONTEREY PARK -- Cal State LA's baseball team had to wait awhile, but the Golden Eagles were able to celebrate a win in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener Friday night at East Los Angeles College.
The Golden Eagles got a game-winning single off the bat of
Malik Clayton to drive in
Cesar Chavez in the bottom of the 13th inning of a tense 8-7 win over Cal State San Marcos on Friday. Cal State LA (4-7, 1-0 CCAA) and Cal State San Marcos (5-5, 1-4 CCAA) battled for four-and-a-half hours before Clayton's hard grounder up the middle went off the pitcher's hand and to shortstop Fisher Pyatt, whose hurried throw to home wasn't in time to get Chavez.
The two teams combined for 15 runs, 25 hits, 27 runners left on base and 30 strikeouts.
In addition to scoring the winning run, Chavez was also a defensive star for the Golden Eagles, throwing out a pair of base runners at the plate from right field.Â
Cal State LA had 14 hits, including three each from
Ben Lee, Clayton and
Isaiah Marquez.
Cal State San Marcos had 11 hits, including a three-run home run from Cameron Mahaffy and a two-run home run from Hayden Tregidga.
Atticus Gonzalez pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Golden Eagles to pick up his first win. He followed freshman
Ismael Quintero, who tossed three scoreless innings and got out of a crazy bases-loaded jam in the 11th inning unscathed. With runners on first and third and two outs, Tyler Weaver sent a line drive that seemed headed to Cal State LA shortstop
Ethan Gonzalez for what would have been the final out of the inning. Instead, the ball hit the base umpire, which resulted in Weaver getting credit for a single to load the bases. Quintero overcame the bad break and got the final out via strikeout to end the inning.
Alejandro Huezo started for the Golden Eagles and allowed six hits and four runs, while Spencer Anderson started for Cal State San Marcos and allowed three earned runs over five innings.Â
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Ethan Rivera singled in a run, but Chavez prevented further damage when he fired a beautiful throw to the plate to cut down Mahaffey trying to score from second.
Cal State LA then took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning.
Carson Panarisi doubled in a run and Clayton came around to score as well on an error to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Javy Espinosa and a run-scoring single by Gonzalez, but Cal State San Marcos tied it in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Phoenix Sommay and a two-run home run by Tregidga.
The Cougars then extended their lead to 7-4 on Mahaffy's three-run home run in the seventh.
Cal State LA, though, came right back to score twice in the bottom of the inning on a double-play ground out by Panarisi and a single by the middle by Marquez. The Golden Eagles then tied it in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Lee and the teams battled until the 13th inning for a decision.
Chavez reached on an error and moved to second on a single by Lee. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and Clayton then won it.
The four-game series will continue on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
