MONTEREY PARK -- Cal State LA's baseball team got a masterful pitching performance from
Brandon Gutierrez to earn a split on Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Cal State San Marcos.
Gutierrez allowed only an infield single in seven shutout innings to lead the Golden Eagles to a 6-0 win in the nightcap at East Los Angeles College. Cal State LA (5-7, 2-1 CCAA) had dropped the opener, 7-0, after Cal State San Marcos starter Jordan Townley tossed seven shutout innings.
Gutierrez allowed only the one hit and three walks while striking out five and picking up the first win of his Cal State LA career. As a freshman, he appeared in four relief appearances covering 5 1/3 innings.
He's made huge strides to get to where he was on Saturday when he was in firm command from start to finish. He was making the third start of his sophomore season and lowered his earned run average to 3.38 with Saturday's seven shutout innings.
He was backed up nicely by an offense that finally perked up after going scoreless in the first 11 innings of the doubleheader.
Ethan Gonzalez started a five-inning third inning rally for the Golden Eagles with a single and took second on a single by
Kadyn Victorian. After
Cesar Chavez was hit by a pitch to load the bases,
Ben Lee doubled to the left-centerfield gap to drive in two runs and give Cal State LA the lead.
Malik Clayton followed with a two-run single to make it 4-0 and
Carson Panarisi singled in another run to make it 5-0.
Cal State LA added a run in the fourth inning when Gonzalez doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chavez.
After issuing a one-out walk in the fifth, Gutierrez retired the final eight Cal State San Marcos batters to secure the win.
Lee was 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI, Clayton was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
In the opener, Cal State LA managed only five hits against three Cal State San Marcos pitchers. Townley went the first seven innings and allowed five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts, while Connor Gleissner and Chris Espinoza pitched scoreless innings to complete the shutout.
Mateo Lake hit a two-run home run for the Cougars (6-6, 2-5 CCAA), who also got two hits and three runs scored from leadoff batter Phoenix Sommay and two RBI from Garrett Teunissen.
Bryan Nunez, Clayton, Javy Espinosa, Gonzalez and Victorian had the Cal State LA hits, all singles.
AJ Moreno started and allowed eight hits and six runs over five innings for the Golden Eagles.
Anthony Diaz tossed two scoreless innings of relief,
Isaac Quintero allowed no hits and one run in one inning of work and
Jonathan Manuel pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Cal State LA and Cal State San Marcos will conclude the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
