FULLERTON -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw a late 7-3 lead slip away, but a pair of newcomers saved the day Friday for the Golden Eagles.
Gilbert Morales followed up a four-run eighth inning by Regis with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the inning and freshman
Ismael Quintero pitched a scoreless ninth inning to lead the Golden Eagles to a non-conference win at Cal State Fullerton's Goodwin Field. Cal State LA (3-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.
The home run was one of three hits for Morales, who drove in three runs.
Malik Clayton went 3-4 with a triple and two RBI and
Isaiah Marquez went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Jack Moulin had the biggest hit for Regis (5-7), a game-tying two-run double in the top of the eighth.
Kadyn Victorian had a pair of stolen bases, a triple and two runs scored.
Alejandra Huezo was the first of four Golden Eagles pitchers and he had a great start, tossing 6 2/3 innings and giving up just three hits and three runs. He started with four shutout innings, was touched for three runs in the fifth and then rebounded with a scoreless sixth inning. He left with two outs and nobody on base in the seventh and
Joel Martinez retired the only batter he faced on strikes to end that frame.
The Rangers, though, took advantage of two walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches to pull to within 7-5 in the eighth and Moulin tied it with a two-out double. Quintero entered and got the final out of the inning.
After the first two batters were retired via strikeout in the eighth, Morales hit a shot over the right-centerfield fence to account for the winning run. Quintero worked around a two-out single in the ninth and ended the game with a strikeout to pick up his second win of the season.
The four-game series will continue with a doubleheader at Goodwin Field on Saturday at 11 a.m.
