LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's baseball team came up short on Monday in its series finale at Biola.
The Golden Eagles fell behind after a six-run fourth inning, battled back to within a run, but stranded four baserunners over their final two at bats in a 9-7 loss at Eagles Diamond. Cal State LA (2-4) dropped all three games to Biola (3-4).
Cesar Chavez went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two runs driven in to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Kai Penuelas went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
Ben Lee also had a pair of hits.
Gilbert Morales went 1-for-4 with two runs scored for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Javy Espinosa reached on an error that allowed
Kadyn Victorian to score, Morales doubled in
Malik Clayton and Penuelas singled up the middle to drive in Morales.
Lino Zepeda got the start and tossed three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Biola bunched together five hits, two walks and a hit batter against Zepeda and reliever
Ismael Quintero to score six times and take the lead.
The Golden Eagles closed to within 7-5 after scoring twice in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Chavez that scored Penuelas and an infield single by
Ethan Gonzalez that drove in Chavez.
Cal State LA then got to within 8-7 with a pair of runs in the seventh.
Isaiah Marquez scored on a wild pitch and Chavez singled in Morales.
The Golden Eagles, though, stranded a pair of baserunners in each of the final two innings and Biola held on.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday, Feb. 21 in the opener of a four-game series against Regis.
