Golden Eagles Win In Three At Dominguez Hills

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team had a big challenge to close out a three-set win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday and the Golden Eagles were up to the task.

The Golden Eagles fought off three set points before closing out the Toros, 25-23, 25-20, 31-29 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Torodome. Cal State LA (17-6, 13-3 CCAA) completed a 2-0 weekend and maintained its share of second place in the conference standings with two conference matches remaining.

The Golden Eagles have already clinched their spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

Samarah DaCoud had 20 kills, three aces and 13 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Ayjah Landers had 14 kills, four blocks and eight digs and Zuhal Cetin had 14 kills and four digs.

Bailey Fuchs had 19 kills for Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-14, 5-11 CCAA), while Ava Hurry had nine kills.

Seriah Demski had a new season high with 43 set assists for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA had a 50-46 advantage in kills and hit at a .325 percentage to .220 for the Toros. The Golden Eagles also had an 8-2 advantage in blocks and had six aces and seven errors to six aces and five errors for the Toros.

Cal State LA opened up a 22-15 lead in the opening set after a kill by Landers, an ace by Demski and back-to-back kills, but then had to hold off a determined charge by the Toros, who pulled to within 24-23 before a kill by DaCoud ended the set.

The Golden Eagles trailed 16-15 in the second set before back-to-back kills by Cetin and a block by Cetin put them ahead for good. The Golden Eagles led by just two points, 21-19, before an attack error and back-to-back kills from DaCoud got them to set point before a kill by Landers ultimately ended the set.

The Golden Eagles had to rally back from an early 8-2 deficit to complete the sweep. The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the set at 15-13 after an ace by Brooke Paige, but faced a set point at 24-23. A block by Landers and a ball-handling error got the Golden Eagles to match point, but a kill by Fuchs tied it at 25-25. A kill by DaCoud gave the Golden Eagles a second match point at 26-25, but the Toros scored the next two points to get to their second set point. A kill by DaCoud and an ace by DaCoud got the Golden Eagles to match point again at 28-27, but the Toros scored the next two points to take their last set point at 29-28.

The Golden Eagles responded by taking the last three points on a kill by Cetin and two attack errors to finish the match.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday against Stanislaus State on Senior Night in University Gym.
