LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team started quickly, but couldn't close out a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles took the first two sets, but the visiting Warriors roared back for a 22-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-11 win in University Gym. Cal State LA (17-7, 13-4 CCAA) hit .400 in the opening set, but hit at a .000 percentage over the last three sets with 25 kills and 25 errors in 88 swings.
The loss dropped the Golden Eagles into third place in the conference, while the Warriors (12-12, 10-7 CCAA) moved into a three-way tie for fourth. Both teams have already qualified for the six-team conference championship tournament next week at Stanislaus State.
Samarah DaCoud had 20 kills and three aces for the Golden Eagles, while
Ayjah Landers had 13 kills and two aces.
Christallynn Tate had a match-high 27 kills for the Warriors, while Malia Tanksley had nine kills and five blocks.
Seriah Demski and
Arielle Chandler combined for 46 set assists, while
Madison Clark had seven blocks to go along with two kills.
Rebecca Topete had eight kills.
Stanislaus State had a 60-55 advantage in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .250 - .133. The Warriors also had a 15-9 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had nine aces and seven errors, while Stanislaus State had five aces and 10 errors.
Cal State LA jumped out to quick 7-2 lead in the opening set, but the Warriors surged to take a 14-11 lead. The set was tied at 20-20 before a kill by
Zuhal Cetin and an ace by Demski gave the Golden Eagles the lead. Clark and Cetin combined for a block for a 23-21 lead and, after Stanislaus State made it 23-22, back-to-back kills by DaCoud ended the set.
Cal State LA took a 20-14 lead in the second set after a kill by Topete and a block by Clark and Cetin and moved out to a 23-16 lead after a kill by Topete, a block by Clark and Landers and an attack error. The Golden Eagles got to set point after a serving error and won the set on a kill by DaCoud.
Cal State LA took a 15-13 lead in the third set after an ace by
Rachel Lowe, but the Warriors rallied and took six of the last seven points of the set to make it 2-1.
Cal State LA was tied at 13-13 in the fourth set, but the Warriors went on a 5-0 run to take command and kept a safe margin to force a fifth set.
The Golden Eagles took a 5-2 lead in the fifth set after a 5-0 run that included an ace by DaCoud, but the Warriors battled back to tie it and then took the lead at 8-7. The set was tied at 9-9 before the Warriors scored two straight points to take the lead and got to match point at 14-10. A kill by Landers kept the Golden Eagles in it, but an attack error ended the match.
