Golden Eagles Fall In Five Sets To Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team ended the regular season on Saturday with yet another five-set decision, this one at Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles were unable to hold a 2-1 lead and the Coyotes rallied to take a 19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-11, 15-11 decision in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State LA (17-8, 13-5 CCAA) finished third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and received the No. 3 seed for the CCAA Tournament, which begins on Thursday at Stanislaus State.

The Golden Eagles will face No. 6 seed Cal State East Bay in the tournament opener on Thursday at 3 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinals to face No. 2 seed Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.

The Golden Eagles ended the regular season on a frustrating note, dropping five-set matches to Stanislaus State and Cal State San Bernardino to fall out of second place.

Cal State LA has played 10 five-set matches and is now 6-4 in those contests. Both Cal State LA-Cal State San Bernardino matches went five sets with each team winning on its home court.

Samarah DaCoud had a team-high 19 kills, three aces and 12 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Zuhal Cetin had 13 kills and 16 digs and Ayjah Landers had 10 kills and 12 digs.

Kacie Pedersen had 19 kills to lead Cal State San Bernardino (20-5, 15-3 CCAA), while Kisa Sagiao had 15 kills and seven blocks.

Madison Clark had eight kills and seven blocks for the Golden Eagles, Seriah Demski and Arielle Chandler combined for 44 set assists and Juliana Speiski had 21 digs.

Cal State San Bernardino had a 62-54 advantage in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .250 - .161. The Golden Eagles hit at a negative percentage in the fourth and fifth sets. The Coyotes also had a 14-8 advantage in blocks. Cal State LA had eight aces and six errors, while Cal State San Bernardino had nine aces and nine errors.

Cal State LA started well and took the opening set. A 6-0 run fueled by a pair of kills by Landers, a block from Landers and Clark and a solo block by Clark gave the Golden Eagles a 14-7 lead. The Golden Eagles led comfortably the rest of the set and closed out the frame on a kill by Landers.

Cal State San Bernardino took control early in the second set to even the match, but Cal State LA bounced back nicely in the third to regain the lead. Kills by DaCoud and Cetin, an attack error and an ace by DaCoud broke a 13-13 tie and the Golden Eagles pulled away. A kill by DaCoud got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-18 and a kill by DaCoud ended the set.

Cal State LA, though, never really got a chance to put the match away. Cal State San Bernardino scored the first eight points of the fourth set and never looked back and then opened up a 6-1 lead in the fifth set and never relinquished it.
