LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team will be starting what it hopes is a lengthy postseason journey on Friday in a NCAA Super Region 4 first-round playoff match in Carson.
The No. 7 seed Golden Eagles will face No. 10 seed UCCS in a first-round game at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m. The winner will advance to a second-round contest against No. 2 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday at 3 p.m.
This is uncharted territory for the Golden Eagles, who have been hosts for the first two rounds ever since the Super Region format was instituted in 2019. Cal State LA won Super Region 4 titles in 2019 and 2021 on its way to national championship appearances in both seasons. The Golden Eagles were national finalists in 2021 and then won the program's first national title in 2021.Â
Cal State LA (8-4-6) will face a formidable opponent on Friday in UCCSÂ (11-5-4), which is making its third straight NCAA appearace after capturing the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season and conference championships.
The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, finished third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and have been idle since falling to Cal State East Bay in a first-round conference tournament match in University Stadium on Nov. 9.Â
Cal State LA and UCCS will be facing each other for the first time.
Cal State LA is making its 19th NCAA appearance, its 13th in the past 14Â years and its eighth straight.
Cal State LA and UCCS will be one of two first-round matches on Friday. No. 8 seed Western Oregon will meet No. 9 seed Hawaii-Hilo on Friday at No. 1 seed Stanislaus State. The Warriors will host the winner on Sunday.
In other second-round matches set for this week, No. 3 seed Point Loma will host No. 6 seed Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday and No. 4 seed Midwestern State will host No. 5 seed Seattle Pacific on Sunday.
The regional semifinals will be held at two sites on Nov. 30 with the Super Region 4 title match scheduled for Dec. 7. The national semifinals and finals will be held on Dec. 12 and 14 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
