LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was unable to overcome a rough start in its 2025 season opener on Friday afternoon in University Gym.
The Golden Eagles struggled from distance and fell to Biola, 77-66, in the opening game of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge. Cal State LA (0-1) was just 5-of-27 from 3-point range, while Biola (1-0) was 11-of-22.
The difference was most apparent in the opening half when the Golden Eagles were 1-of-12 from 3-point range and the visiting Eagles were 8-of-12 while building a 45-28 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles finally began to find their stride in the second half, but it was too late.
Khemanni Davis had 11 points to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring, while
JJ Howard and
Connor Scales had nine points each.
Tyus Tillman-Parrish had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Biola, while Cameron Brown and Charlie Gehler had 13 points each.
Donovan Vickers had eight points, while
Deraje Agbaosi had seven points, three rebounds and three assists for the Golden Eagles.
Isaiah Fields had six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 36.9 percent (24-of-65) and was just 5-of-27 from 3-point range. Biola shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) and was 11-of-22 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 13-of-15 from the free-throw line, while Biola was 8-of-12. Biola had a 37-30 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA forced 23 turnovers and committed only 12.
Cal State LA shot just 30 percent in the opening half, while Biola shot 58.6 percent.
Cal State LA jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after a 3-pointer from Vickers and an offensive rebound basket from
Damarion Pouncil. Biola, though, began to find its range and went on a 12-2 run to open up a 12-7 lead and never looked back.
Cal State LA will conclude play in the tourney with a game at Concordia on Saturday at 2 p.m.
