IRVINE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had some second-half difficulties and fell short to Concordia on Saturday in the second day of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge.
The visiting Golden Eagles managed only 28 points in the second half and fell to the host Golden Eagles, 77-62, in CU Arena. Cal State LA (0-2) made only nine baskets in the second half and was outscored, 42-28. Concordia, on the other hand, shot 54.3 percent in the second half and was able to pull away late in the game.
Khemanni Davis scored a game-high 26 points for Cal State LA, while
Michael Pearson Jr. and
Deraje Agbaosi had eight points each.
Macarhy Morris had 16 points to lead four Concordia players in double figures. Marcellus Edwards and Nicholas Corbett had 15 points each and Kaden Minter had 14 points.
Isaiah Fields had six points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles. who also got four points each from
Donovan Vickers,
Jordan Hansen and
JJ Howard.
Cal State LA shot 40.4 percent for the game (21-of-52) and was just 3-of-10 from 3-point range, including 1-of-8 in the second half. The Golden Eagles were 17-of-22 from the free-throw line and hit all nine attempts in the second half. Concordia shot 47 percent for the game (31-of-66) and was 7-of-23 from 3-point range. The hosts were 8-of-12 from the free-throw line. Concordia had a 40-31 rebounding edge and had 16 turnovers, while Cal State LA had 15.
The Golden Eagles got off to a better start than they did in their season opener on Friday and trailed by just one point at halftime. Neither team had a lead larger than four points in the first half and Cal State LA trailed by just one point, 35-34, after a late layup by Agbaosi just before halftime.
Davis hit a layup and Fields had a steal and dunk to give Cal State LA a 38-35 lead early in the second half, but Concordia went on a 9-0 run to regain its lead and the home team led the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday with a home game against Azusa Pacific.
