Golden Eagles Fall Short Against Cougars

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team went cold down the stretch and came up short in a non-conference battle against Azusa Pacific.

The Golden Eagles pulled to within two points after a three-point play by Isaiah Fields with four minutes to play, but managed only two points the rest of the way and fell to the Cougars, 69-62, Wednesday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (0-3) was held under 70 points for a third straight game.

Khemanni Davis had a team-high 14 points for the Golden Eagles, while Fields had nine points and seven rebounds and JJ Howard and Michael Pearson Jr. also scored nine points each.

Shad Thomas had a game-high 17 points to lead Azusa Pacific (1-1), while Kaleb Taylor and Shant Chenorhavorian had 11 points each.

Deraje Agbaosi had seven points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Connor Scales had five points, including a 3-pointer.

Cal State LA shot just 36.5 percent for the game (23-of-63) and was just 5-of-22 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. Azusa Pacific shot just 34.2 percent (26-of-76) and was 9-of-36 from 3-point range. The Cougars were 8-of-15 from the free-throw line. Azusa Pacific had a 55-37 rebounding edge and committed 16 turnovers to 14 for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA trailed by as many as eight points early in the game, but a jumper by Pearson Jr. cut the deficit to 30-27 at halftime. The Golden Eagles then took a 32-20 lead early in the second half after a layup by Agbaosi and a 3-pointer by Scales. Cal State LA took its last lead at 43-42 after a jumper by Davis with 14 minutes to go.

The game was tied several times in the last 10 minutes, including at 60-60 after a driving three-point play by Fields with 4:19 left, but the Cougars scored the next seven points to take control. A layup by Howard with 21 seconds left snapped the run, but the Cougars hit two late free throws to account for the final margin.

The Golden Eagles will return to action with a road game at Fresno Pacific on Monday.
