Golden Eagles Break Into The Win Column In Fresno

FRESNO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned things up a notch on Monday in Fresno.

The Golden Eagles, who had battled through three disappointing defeats to open the season, scored a season-high in points and picked up an 87-71 win over host Fresno Pacific in the Special Events Center. Cal State LA (1-3) scored more than 70 points for the first time this season and had its offense clicking. The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent for the game and knocked down 12 of their 3-point attempts.

Deraje Agbaosi had a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead five Golden Eagles in double figures. Michael Pearson Jr. and JJ Howard had 13 points each and Khemanni Davis and Isaiah Fields had 12 points each.

Seth Brown had 23 points for Fresno Pacific (0-4), while Harrison Pennisi had 12 points.

Connor Scales had seven points, while Jordan Hansen had four points, four rebounds and four steals.

Cal State LA made 32-of-64 from the floor, including 12-of-26 from 3-point range in its best shooting performance of the season. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-16 from the free-throw line. Fresno Pacific shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) and was 7-of-22 from 3-point range. The Sunbirds were 18-of-27 from the free-throw line. Fresno Pacific had a 33-32 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA committed only eight turnovers compared to 16 for Fresno Pacific.

The Golden Eagles trailed early, 5-2, but went on a 9-0 run to take the lead for good. A layup by Agbaosi and a layup by Davis after a steal by Donovan Vickers put the Golden Eagles ahead and a 3-pointer by Scales and a layup by Hansen made it 11-5. Fresno Pacific got as close as one point during the first half, but the Golden Eagles got 3-pointers by Agbaosi and Fields and a pair of free throws by Pearson Jr. to end the half with a 41-31 lead.

Fresno Pacific closed to within five points early in the second half, but 3-pointers by Pearson Jr. and Fields pushed the lead back to 58-47 with 12:46 to go and Cal State LA led by double-digit margins the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by Davis gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 83-63 with 3:40 left.

Cal State LA will return to action this Friday with a non-conference game at Northwest Nazarene.
