LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's
Alex Mendez earned second-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors to lead three Golden Eagles on the all-conference team announced by the conference on Wednesday.
Mendez, a senior midfielder, earned All-CCAA honors in his first season with the program. Two other Golden Eagles, senior
Erick Alamo and junior
Geovanni Antuna, earned All-CCAA honorable mention.
The team was voted on by the conference head coaches.
Mendez, a transfer from California Baptist, started all 16 games he's played so far with the Golden Eagles. He is second on the team with four goals and shares the team lead in points with 10.
Alamo, in his third season with the program, leads the team with five goals and 10 points. He has appeared in 36 games over the past two seasons with seven goals and two assists.
Antuna, in his third season with the Golden Eagles, is enjoying his best year with the program. He has started all 18 games so far this season and has been one of the team's top defenders. He also has two goals and two assists for six points.
Ndifor Ginyui of Cal State Dominguez Hills was named the CCAA Defender of the Year and Player of the Year after leading the Toros to the regular-season conference title. Gerardo Flores of Stanislaus State was the Forward of the Year, Alejandro Zarate of Cal State East Bay was the Midfielder of the Year, Marvin Gamez of Cal Poly Pomona was the Newcomer of the Year, Sebastian Carbajal was the Freshman of the Year and John Powell of Stanislaus State was the Coach of the Year.
Cal State LA was ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II Super Region 4 in rankings released on Wednesday. The tournament selections will be announced on Monday, Nov. 17.
