Golden Eagles Keep Pace With Win Over Bobcats

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team was in winning form Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over UC Merced.

The Golden Eagles (14-4, 10-1 CCAA) won for the 10th time in 11 conference matches with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-19 win over the Bobcats in University Gym. Cal State LA remains one game back of conference-leading Cal Poly Pomona and two ahead of third-place Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State East Bay with seven conference matches remaining.

Samarah DaCoud had another outstanding match for the Golden Eagles, recording 16 kills and hitting at a .560 percentage. Ayjah Landers had eight kills, two aces and three blocks.

UC Merced (5-15, 4-7 CCAA) was led by Kyra Miller and Sera Riley, who had seven kills each. Miller also had 12 set assists and two blocks.

Juliana Speiski had a match-high 11 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Arielle Chandler had a team-high 17 set assists. Madison Clark had five kills and one block.

The Golden Eagles led for most of the first set before finishing things off with a 4-0 run thanks to back-to-back kills from DaCoud, a block from Mariana Alvarado and Oluwatoyin Sunday and an ace by Landers.

Cal State LA took a quick 9-4 lead in the second set and was never seriously threatened. Cal State LA ultimately closed out the set at 25-20 on a kill by Tehya Chadwick.

The Golden Eagles trailed in the third set before two kills by Landers and one by Clark pushed the Golden Eagles to a 10-8 lead. A kill by DaCoud, a block by Rachel Lowe and Rebecca Topete and an ace by Landers gave the Golden Eagles a 16-10 lead and they maintained a safe advantage the rest of the way. The Bobcats pulled to within 22-19, but the Golden Eagles got back-to-back kills by DaCoud and an ace by Sanders to end the match.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5 p.m.
