No. 25 Golden Eagles Settle For Draw With Biola

LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team got off to a fast start Wednesday at Biola, but the Golden Eagles ultimately had to settle for a tie in a non-conference battle at Al Barbour Field.

The No. 25 Golden Eagles got a goal from Reyna Roman in the fifth minute, but the Eagles got the equalizer in the 27th minute and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Cal State LA (2-0-3) earned its second straight 1-1 draw, while Biola (0-2-2) also recorded a second straight tie.

Cal State LA had a big 20-4 advantage in shots, including a 14-1 edge in the second half, but was unable to score a second goal. Cal State LA had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Despite the big advantage in possession and chances, the Golden Eagles settled for their third tie in five starts this season.

Biola goalkeeper Autum Monty made a season-high eight saves, including six in the second half, while Cal State LA goalkeeper Taesja Paopao, the California Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week, made two saves for the Golden Eagles.

Roman put the Golden Eagles quickly with her second goal of the season with an assist from Syra Valdez, who picked up her first assist and third point of the season.

Jazzmin Ortiz had a match-high four shots for the Golden Eagles, while Shelby Melin had three. Itzel Carbajal, Liliana Gonzalez, Peytyn Mize, Dalia Bocanegra and Roman each had two shots for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game against Cal State Dominguez Hills in University Stadium.
