Golden Eagles Split Doubleheader With Warriors

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had the offense rolling in the opener of its California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Stanislaus State on Friday, but couldn't replicate the formula in the nightcap.

The Golden Eagles recorded a 20-8 win over the Warriors in the opener, but the Warriors turned the tables in the nightcap and earned a split with an 8-3 victory at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (23-26, 17-22 CCAA) remains in seventh in the CCAA standings, but will miss the six-team conference tournament after Chico State and Sonoma State split a doubleheader on Friday to claim the final two spots.

Owen Hunt gutted out a five-inning start in the opener to pick up his team-leading sixth win of the season while being backed by a 19-hit attack.

Kai Penuelas had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, three runs scored and four RBI, while Elijah Jackson also had four hits while scoring a pair of runs. Malik Clayton had a home run as part of a two-hit game with three runs and three RBI and Isaiah Marquez ws 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Cesar Chavez was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Matthew Piotrowski reached base five times and scored three times.

Cal State LA broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning that included a two-run single by Clayton, a run-scoring single by Penuelas, two groundouts for runs batted in by Ethan Gonzalez and Chavez and a run-scoring double by Jackson.

Stanislaus State scored four times in the sixth inning to pull to within 10-8 with Brent Jacques finally retiring the side to keep the Golden Eagles ahead. Art Ruiz delivered a key two-run single in the bottom of the inning to make it 12-8 and the Golden Eagles scored four times in the seventh and four times in the eighth to extend the lead. Marquez had a two-run single and Penuelas had a two-run double in the seventh and Javy Espinoza had a two-run double, Marquez had a run-scoring single and Penuelas had a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Jacques allowed four hits and an unearned run over three innings of relief with no walks and five strikeouts, while Michael Gill pitched a scoreless ninth inning to finish up.

Stanislaus State (18-27-1, 14-23 CCAA) rebounded with an 8-3 win in the nightcap. Flavio Perez hit a three-run home run in the third inning to stake the Warriors to a 4-1 lead and Tony Jacob went six strong innings to get the win.

Eric Navarrete pitched six strong innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing only six hits and three earned runs. He didn't walk a batter and struck out eight.

Ethan Gonzalez went 3-for-3, Piotrowski tripled and scored a run and Clayton had a run-scoring double in the bottom of the third to make it 4-2.

Cal State LA and Stanislaus State will conclude the season on Saturday with a single game at noon on Senior Day.
