LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team returned from its bye week with a hard-earned victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Fridayu night in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Reeder Field.
The Golden Eagles rallied from a 4-2 deficit with five runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth and went on to a 10-5 victory over the Toros. Cal State LA (8-7, 2-3 CCAA) snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory, while handing Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-12, 3-6 CCAA) its fifth straight loss.
Malik Clayton went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three runs batted in, including a two-run home run in the five-run fifth inning.
Elijah Jackson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI and
Javy Espinoza and
Matthew Piotrowski had two hits each.
Holden Hungerford had a good start for the Golden Eagles, allowing only three hits and one unearned run in four innings.
Anthony Lopez gave up three hits and two earned runs over the next two innings to improve to 3-0 on the season and
Brent Jacques allowed one hit and no runs over the final three innings to pick up the save.
Trey Winget and Noah Karliner had two hits each for the Toros. Bryan Kraft allowed seven hits and six earned runs over five innings for the Toros and took his first loss of the season.
After the Toros took advantage of a pair of Cal State LA errors in the first to take a 1-0 lead, the Golden Eagles tied it in the third. Clayton led off with a double, took third on a single by
Kadyn Victorian and scored on a single by Jackson. The Golden Egales then took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on an infield single by Clayton that scored
Isaiah Marquez.
Cal State Dominguez Hills scored three times in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Emilio Barrera drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and a dropped fly ball and a throwing error by the Golden Eagles after two were out led to two more runs.
Cal State LA regained the lead in the fifth. Jackson walked and Espinoza reached base with a beautiful bunt to start the rally. Piotrowski followed with a double just past a diving third baseman to drive in Jackson and Espinoza scored on a wild pitch to tie it at 4-4. Marquez delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4 and, after a walk to
Art Ruiz, Clayton slugged a two-run home run to left field to make it 7-4.
Espinoza and Marquez had run-scoring singles in the sixth to make it 9-4 and the Golden Eagles got their final run in the seventh on a single by Jackson.
Cal State LA will continue the four-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.Â
