Golden Eagles Win Nightcap To Earn DH Split

SAN BERNARDINO -- After dropping a high-scoring opener, Cal State LA's baseball team managed to take the nightcap and earn a doubleheader split on Saturday against Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles fell, 11-7, in the first game, but got outstanding pitching from Owen Hunt and Joel Martinez to take the seven-inning nightcap, 6-4, at Fiscalini Field. Cal State LA (12-9, 6-5 CCAA) got a pair of home runs from Elijah Jackson in the opener and two hits and three runs batted in from Javy Espinoza in the nightcap.

Jackson had five hits and scored six runs in the doubleheader for the Golden Eagles.

Owen Hunt allowed five hits and four runs over 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win in the nightcap. He walked two and struck out four while improving to 3-2 on the season. Joel Martinez allowed only one hit in 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his third save.

Cal State LA took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Espinoza to drive in Jackson, who tripled to lead off the game. Cal State San Bernardino got a two-run home run from Garrett Macias in the bottom of the inning, but Drew Emmons singled in Jackson in the third inning to tie it at 2-2.

Cal State LA scored four times in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Espinoza had a two-run single to break the 2-2 tie, Matthew Piotrowski singled in a run to make it 5-2 and Emmons reached on a fielder's choice to make it 6-2.

The Coyotes scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to close to within 6-4, but Hunt got out of the jam without any further damage and pitched into the sixth. Martinez then took it from there.

Cal State LA dropped the opener, 11-7. Jackson hit a solo home run in the eighth inning and a two-run home run in the ninth to get the Golden Eagles close.

Piotrowski had a two-run single to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead in the third, but the Coyotes got a two-run home run from Jake Borst in the bottom of the third to regain the lead and added four unearned runs after a two-out error in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. The Coyotes built their lead to 8-2 before Jackson started a three-run rally in the top of the eighth with a solo home run. Isaiah Marquez hit a two-run double to cut the margin to 8-5.

The Coyotes, though, responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 11-5 lead. Jackson's two-run home run, his fourth of the season, made it 11-7.

Cal State LA will conclude the series against Cal State San Bernardino with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
