Golden Eagles Complete A Series Sweep Of Toros

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team completed an impressive four-game sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday in a game that bared little resemblance to the previous three games.

After taking the first three games in come-from-behind fashion with a lot of runs, the Golden Eagles prevailed on Sunday thanks to some outstanding pitching with no comeback needed. Cal State LA scored single runs in the first and second innings and never looked back in a 5-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (11-7, 5-3 CCAA) won all four games in the series to move into contention in the conference.

Miles Halligan and three relievers combined to limit Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-15, 3-9 CCAA) to just four hits  and a single run in the fourth inning. Halligan allowed the four hits and one run and went five innings to pick up his first win with the Golden Eagles. He walked four and struck out three.

Moises Escobedo, Kai Penuelas and Anthony Diaz combined to hold the Toros without a hit over the final four innings. Escobedo tossed two scoreless innings with two walks and three strikeouts, while Penuelas retired all three he batters he faced in the eighth. Diaz then finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning, walking one and striking out one.

Seven batters had one hit each for the Golden Eagles. Ethan Gonzalez had a two-run single in the eighth inning to stretch a slim Golden Eagle lead from 3-1 to 5-1. Matthew Piotrowski, Malik Clayton and Kadyn Victorian also drove in runs, while Isaiah Marquez had a double and two runs scored.

Cal State Dominguez Hills got a strong start from Pat MacDonald, who allowed five hits and two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings. Alex Sepulveda, Garet Crenshaw, CJ Masciel and Grant Decatrel had the hits for the Toros.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first when Elijah Jackson smacked a leadoff double, took third on a groundout by Javy Espinoza and scored on a single by Piotrowski.

Cal State LA made it 2-0 in the second when Marquez walked and later scored on a two-out single by Victorian.

The Toros got a run back in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, but Halligan stranded two with a strikeout to preserve the one-run lead.

Cal State LA made it 3-1 in the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by Clayton and then Gonzalez delivered a big two-run single in the eighth to account for the final runs of the game.

Cal State LA will open a four-game series at Cal State San Bernardino beginning next Friday.
