SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's baseball team dropped the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series Friday at Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early and were unable to recover in a 10-5 loss to the Coyotes at Fiscalini Field. Cal State LA (11-8, 5-4 CCAA) had a four-game winning streak snapped by Cal State San Bernardino (10-11, 3-8 CCAA).
Matthew Piotrowski went 2-for-4 with a pair of extra-base hits, two runs scored and two RBI for the Golden Eagles, Ethan Jackson went 2-for-5 with a run scored and
Andrew Tovar went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Garrett Macias went 4-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. Giovanni Del Negro and Jake Borst also hit home runs for the Coyotes.
Holden Hungerford started for the Golden Eagles and took the loss after allowing five hits and five runs over three innings. He worked into the fourth inning and left after the first two base runners reached base.
Brent Jacques allowed three hits and one run over 3 1/3 innings and
Jorge Romero got the final five outs and allowed two hits.
Cal State LA started the game well, scoring twice in the top of the first. Jackson led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout by
Javy Espinoza and scored on a triple by Piotrowski. Tovar then singled in Piotrowski to make it 2-0.
The lead didn't last, though, as the Coyotes got a solo home run from Macias in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1 and a two-run double by Daniel Garcia Jr. to take the lead. Macias added a two-run single with two outs in the fourth to make it 5-2.
Cal State LA got a solo home run from
Isaiah Marquez to lead off the seventh, but the Coyotes countered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead back to 10-3. Cal State LA finished the scoring with two runs in the eighth on back-to-back doubles from Espinoza and Piotrowski and a wild pitch that scored Piotrowski.
Cal State LA will resume the series in San Bernadino with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
