OAHU, HAWAII -- Cal State LA's baseball team saved its best for last on the final day of the Oahu Baseball Classic.
The Golden Eagles broke a 1-1 tie with eight runs in the sixth inning and went on for an 11-2 win over Chaminade on Sunday in their sixth and final game of the tournament. Cal State LA (2-4) dropped its first game on Sunday, a 15-6 decision to Hawaii-Hilo.
Jorge Romero allowed only four hits and one run over five innings in his Cal State LA debut. He walked two and struck out four.
Anthony Lopez allowed only one hit in two scoreless innings of relief while striking out three,
Andrew Duran tossed a scoreless inning, also only allowing one hit and
Daniel Quintero finished up, allowing only an unearned run.
Ethan Gonzalez had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with four runs batted in.
Matthew Piotrowski,
Javy Espinoza,
Malik Clayton and
Will Schwab also had two hits in the game, while
Kadyn Victorian drove in a pair of runs.
Cal State LA took a 1-0 lead in the second when Clayton doubled and scored on a single by Gonzalez.Â
Then, after Chaminade tied it in the fifth, the Golden Eagles broke the game open with their eight-run rally in the sixth. Espinoza and
Cesar Chavez drew walks to open the inning and Clayton was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Isaiah Marquez walked to force in a run and Gonzalez followed with a two-run single to make it 4-1. Victorian followed with a two-run single to increase the lead to 6-1.
Elijah Jackson's single made it 7-1 and Espinoza's two-run single made it 9-1.
Carson Panarisi singled in a run in the eighth to make it 10-1 and Gonzalez delivered a sacrifice fly to complete Cal State LA's scoring.
In the first game on Sunday, the Golden Eagles fell to Hawaii-Hilo. Jackson had a pair of RBI with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly and a seventh-inning single. Piotrowski,
Andrew Tovar and
Kadyn Victorian also drove in runs.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 13, with a road game at Azusa Pacific.
