Sjoerdsma Wins Tourney; Golden Eagles Take Second

ALAMEDA -- Cal State LA's women's golf team had another outstanding tournament as the Golden Eagles finally got in their first competition of the spring.

Morgan Sjoerdsma won the individual championship and Cal State LA finished second as a team at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout that concluded on Tuesday. Sjoerdsma, who grabbed the lead after one round, got to 8-under-par midway through the final round and went on to a three-shot victory. She finished at 1-under-par 71 for the day and finished the tournament at 5-under-par 139. That total is a new program record.

The tournament win was the third of Sjoerdsma's career and her first since the Sonoma State Fall Invitational in 2022. She also won the California Collegiate Athletic Association title in 2022.

For a Cal State LA team that has been knocking on the door of the program's first-ever victory, Tuesday was the closest call yet. The Golden Eagles held a seven-shot lead after one round and had a nine-shot advantage early through the second round, only to see host Cal State East Bay overtake them on the final hole. The Pioneers won by one shot with a 36-hole total of 592, while Cal State LA was second at 593.

In four tournaments in the 2023-24 season, the Golden Eagles now have two second-place finishes and two third-place finishes. This was the closest Cal State LA has come to a team victory as the Golden Eagles finished 13 shots back in their other second-place finish.

Sjoerdsma was the star of the tournament, jumping out to a two-shot lead with a career-low round of 68 on Monday. She had a tremendous start on Tuesday and was at 8-under-par after nine holes and led by at least two shots the rest of the way. She battled back from a double bogey on No. 10 and bogeys on No. 11, No. 13 and No. 16 with a clutch birdie on the par-5 17th hole and a par on 18 to close out a three-shot win.

Zoe Offield of Cal State Monterey Bay was second at 2-under-par 142 and Madison Murr of Cal State San Marcos was third at 1-under-par 143. Liana Brown and Alison Takamiya, both of George Fox, tied for fourth at even-par 144. The top five golfers earned All-Tournament honors.

Sjoerdsma now has three straight top-five finishes.

Joshlyn Ayala shot her second straight round of 75 to finish in a tie for 15th place at 6-over-par 150. Freshman Daniela Andrade also had a final round of 75 and finished in a tie for 18th at 7-over-par 151. Another freshman, Sarah Amaya, shot an 8-over-par 80 and finished 26th at 9-over-par 153, while Harley Richardson shot a final round of 84 and finished in a tie for 52nd at 16-over-par 160.

Playing as individuals, Gabrielle Lawrence finished in a tie for 47th at 159 and Carissa Freeman finished in a tie for 52nd at 160.

Cal State LA will return to action on Monday, March 11 at the Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invitational.
