CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team was unable to finish the California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule with a victory and will open conference tournament play at home on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles surrendered an early goal and fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, Thursday at Toro Field. Cal State LA (9-4-4, 6-4-1 CCAA) slipped from second place to third place in the conference behind Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers beat Cal State San Marcos to jump past Stanislaus State and the Golden Eagles to earn second place and the first-round bye.
The No. 3 Golden Eagles will now host No. 6 seed Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in a CCAA Tournament first-round matchup. The conference semi-finals and finals will be held at Cal Poly Humboldt.
The Toros scored the only goal of the game just 1:11 into the game, cashing in on a turnover near midfield when Taya Bohenko completed a nice give-and-go with Alyssa Villalobos by firing a perfectly-place shot to the far post for her first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles were forced to chase the game from that point on and couldn't break the Toro defense.
Cal State LA had a 12-4 advantage in shots and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks, but Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-5-6, 3-3-5 CCAA) stood firm and kept the shutout.
Cal State LA goalkeeper
Taesja Paopao had two saves for the Golden Eagles, while Kylie Yuzon had three saves for the Toros.
The Golden Eagles had some sustained pressure during the game, most notably in the second half.
Syra Valdez had a header go off the post midway through the final period and
Jassmin Ortiz had a point-blank chance that Yuzon saved with about 20 minutes left. Ortiz then made the defensive play of the game when she was able to clear a shot off the line that would have given the Toros a 2-0 lead with about 19 minutes to go.
Ortiz had a match-high four shots for the game, while
Giselle Uribe had two.
Cal State LA will be playing Cal State Monterey Bay for the second time in as many weeks. The Golden Eagles edged the Otters, 2-1, in Seaside last Sunday. The winner of this Sunday's game will face No. 2 seed Cal State East Bay in the semifinals on Friday in Arcata.
