LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team saw its hopes for a fourth straight trip to the conference semifinals come to a cruel end on Sunday in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
The No. 3 seed Golden Eagles battled No. 6 Cal State Monterey Bay to a 0-0 draw after regulation and two overtime periods before falling short in a nine-round penalty-kick shootout, 6-5, in University Stadium. Cal State LA (9-4-5) had a pair of chances to win the shootout after back-to-back saves from Cal State LA's
Taesja Paopao, but Cal State Monterey Bay's Nylah Mirshafiei countered with two key stops of her own and Danielle Castro's final make in the ninth round sent the Otters to the conference semifinals.
Cal State Monterey Bay (7-3-8) is making its first appearance in a conference tournament and advances to face No. 2 seed Cal State East Bay next Friday at Cal Poly Humboldt.
Cal State LA made its 15th appearance in the conference tournament and its 11th straight and this one ended in heartbreak after a gutty performance against the Otters.
The Golden Eagles recorded their ninth shutout of the season with Paopao making three saves during regulation and the two overtime periods. She also made the two big shootout saves giving her team a chance to advance.
There were few clear offensive opportunities on Sunday as two of the conference's best defenses matched up. The Golden Eagles had a 15-10 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Shelby Melin had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Jaclyn Orozco had two.
Jassmin Ortiz and
Sofia Orozco had quality chances that were stopped by Mirshafiei.
Jaedyn Sanders had a match-high four shots for Cal State Monterey Bay, while Tiger Rendon and Audrey Reyna had three each.

Brianna Valdez and
Destiny Moedano played 110 minutes each to pace the Cal State LA defensive effort.
The best chance for either team during regulation time came when the Otters were awarded a penalty kick in the 40th minute, but Audrey Reyna's attempt was wide and the game stayed scoreless.

Destiny Moedano made shootout attempts for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will now await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament bracket on Monday, Nov. 18. The Golden Eagles were ranked No. 7 in last week's official regional poll.
