Golden Eagles Enjoy A Celebratory Senior Day

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team ended its regular season with a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory on Senior Day.

The Golden Eagles honored seniors Matalasi Danielson, Haley Roundtree and Emily Elliott and then posted a 25-16, 25-22, 26-24 victory over Sonoma State on Saturday in University Gym. Cal State LA (16-9, 11-7 CCAA), the defending national champions, completed a pair of weekend sweeps in its final home games of the season.

The Golden Eagles will now set their sights on the CCAA Tournament, which begins on Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona. They are making their ninth straight tournament appearance and will be going for their first-ever conference tournament title.

Cal State LA finished the conference season in a tie for fourth with Cal State San Bernardino. The 2023 conference co-champions will meet in a quarterfinal match on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Elliott led the way for the Golden Eagles with 19 kills and a .593 hitting percentage. She also had five service aces, one block and five digs and finished with 24.5 points.

Samarah DaCoud had eight kills and hit at a .500 percentage for the Golden Eagles.

Jackie Winfield had eight kills to lead Sonoma State (11-13, 8-10 CCAA), while Brooklyn Jackson and Kaden Young had six kills each.

Zuhal Cetin had seven kills and six digs for the Golden Eagles, while Ashlyn Beaver and Arielle Chandler combined for 30 assists. 

Cal State LA had a 40-30 advantage in kills and outhit the Seawolves, .392-.282. Sonoma State had an 8-4 advantage in blocks. Cal State LA had 13 service aces with Elliott having five and Chandler, Jameson Sanders and Brooke Paige had two each. Rebecca Topete and DaCoud had one each.

The Golden Eagles came out strong and opened up an 8-3 after a kill by Elliott, two aces by Elliott and a kill by Cetin. An ace by Chandler extended the lead to 13-7 and a five-point run capped by a block by Roundtree and Elliott made it 19-10. Cal State LA ultimately closed out the set on a service error.

A pair of kills by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles a 21-16 lead and kills by Cetin and Roundtree and a Sonoma State attack error got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-17. Sonoma State then mounted a strong comeback to close to within 24-22, but Elliott closed out the set with a kill.

An ace by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles a 17-13 lead in the third set, but Sonoma State steadily chipped away and got to set point at 24-23. Kills by Elliott, Cetin and Elliott again accounted for the final three points of the match.
