POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team emerged victorious Thursday night in yet another classic battle with Cal State San Bernardino, this one in a quarterfinal match of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
The Golden Eagles, the defending national champions, fought off three set points in the fourth set and went on to a 25-21, 19-25, 20-25, 29-27, 15-9 win over the Coyotes, the defending CCAA Tournament champs. Cal State LA (17-9) posted its second win over Cal State San Bernardino (15-11) this season and improved to an incredible 8-2 in five-set matches this season.
Emily Elliott led the way once again with 27 kills, four aces, 14 digs and 32 points. She entered the contest ranked No. 1 in the nation in points and No. 3 in kills. Elliott had four kills late in the fifth set to help the Golden Eagles close out the match.
Haley Roundtree had 12 kills and three blocks and
Samarah DaCoud had 11 kills and 12 digs.
Savannah Hoffmann had 12 kills for the Coyotes, while Ashley Robinson had 11 kills and 10 digs.
Jameson Sanders had a match-high 22 digs, while
Ashlyn Beaver and
Arielle Chandler combined for 45 set assists.
Cal State LA had a 59-50 edge in kills and outhit the Coyotes by a narrow margin, .147 - .141. The Coyotes had a 13-12 advantage in blocks and the Golden Eagles had 11 service aces and 15 errors, while the Coyotes had six aces and 10 errors.
The Golden Eagles started well and grabbed the opening set, but the Coyotes rebounded to take the second and third frames and had three chances to end the match in the fourth. The Golden Eagles held a 21-17 lead in the fourth set after a block by
Havannah Vogel and DaCoud, but the Coyotes fought back and got to their first match point at 24-23. Roundtree saved that one for the Golden Eagles with a kill. A kill by Elliott saved the second one to tie it at 25-25 and an attack error tied it for a final time at 27-27. Elliott then got the Golden Eagles to set point at 28-27 with a kill and another attack error by the Coyotes sent the match to a fifth set.
Back-to-back blocks from Vogel, the first with DaCoud and the second with DaCoud staked the Golden Eagles to a quick 6-2 lead and they never looked back. A four-point run on the strength of a pair of Elliott kills, an ace from
Brooke Paige and an attack error boosted the advantage to 11-5. Kills by
Zuhal Cetin and Elliott made it 13-6 and another kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to match point at 14-8 before a service error ended the match.
Cal State LA, the No. 4 seed, will face tournament host and No. 1 seed Cal Poly Pomona on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
