No. 19 Golden Eagles Survive Another 5-Set Battle

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team put in a couple extra shifts once again to secure another five-set California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

For the second straight day and for the fourth time in six conference matches, the Golden Eagles went the extra mile to post a come-from-behind 23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 15-7 victory over Cal State East Bay on Saturday in Pioneer Gymnasium.

No. 19 Cal State LA (9-4, 4-2 CCAA) completed its first weekend sweep in conference play this season. After rallying from a 2-0 deficit to beat Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, the Golden Eagles did it again on Saturday, coming back this time from a 2-1 deficit to outlast Cal State East Bay.

Cal State LA has already played seven five-set matches this season and is 6-1 in those matches.

Emily Elliott, who set a new career program record for kills in the win on Friday, had another big performance on Saturday. She had a match-high 32 kills to lead the Golden Eagles, notching 30 or more kills for the second time this season and the fourth time in her brilliant career.

She had her career-high 35 earlier this season in a five-set win over Seattle Pacific.

Elliott also had two aces and shared the team-lead with 17 digs.

Samarah DaCoud had 11 kills for the Golden Eagles, while Arielle Chandler had 48 set assists, 16 digs and three service aces.

Mia Jordan and Coco Ikpe had 11 kills each for Cal State East Bay (7-7, 2-4 CCAA), while Lexi Pagani had 10 kills.

Zuhal Cetin had seven kills and two blocks for Cal State LA, while Sophia Bernard had six kills and 17 digs. Haley Roundtree had five kills and three blocks.

Cal State LA had a 65-56 edge in kills and outhit the Pioneers, .240-.217. Cal State East Bay had a narrow 6-5 advantage in blocks. Both teams had nine service aces.

After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles jumped out to leads of 8-1 and 10-2, but had to stave off the Pioneers to even things up. Cal State East Bay pulled to within 24-23, but a kill by Elliott evened the match.

The Golden Eagles held a 19-17 lead in the third set, only to see the Pioneers use a 7-0 run to get to set point. A kill by Elliott made it 24-20, but a kill by Jada Stone gave the Pioneers the 2-1 lead.

Cal State LA responded with a 6-0 run to break a 14-14 tie in the fourth set and ultimately won the set on an ace by Elliott.

The Golden Eagles took command of the fifth set with a 6-0 run that extended a 6-4 lead to 12-4. A solo block by Roundtree gave the Golden Eagles a 13-5 and they secured the final two points on kills by DaCoud.

Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a home match against Stanislaus State.
