LOS ANGELES -- The fifth set was not so kind to Cal State LA's women's volleyball team on Friday night.
The No. 18 Golden Eagles had a 6-1 record already this season in five-set matches, but they were unable to hold off Stanislaus State and the Warriors scored the final six points to the match to post a stunning 25-20, 18-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-12 victory in University Gym. Cal State LA (9-5, 4-3 CCAA) held a 2-1 lead in sets and a 12-9 lead in the final set, but Stanislaus State (11-4, 4-3 CCAA) got a pair of aces during a strong final serving run from Isabella Saucedo to win.
Emily Elliott had a match-high 24 kills, seven blocks and seven digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Samarah DaCoud had 11 kills, four blocks and eight digs.
Haley Roundtree had eight kills and seven blocks.
Ellison Weaver had 13 kills, three blocks and seven digs, while Saucedo had six kills and those two big aces in the fifth set.
Arielle Chandler had 34 set assists and 12 digs, while
Jameson Sanders had a team-high 16 digs.
Cal State LA had a 48-47 edge in kills and a 17-9 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had seven aces and 15 service errors, while Stanislaus State had 10 aces and 13 errors.
After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles found their footing in the second and third frames. Cal State LA rallied from a 17-15 deficit in the second set with a 7-0 run highlighted by a kill by Elliott, a block by
Rachel Lowe and Elliott, a block by Lowe and DaCoud, an attack error, a kill by DaCoud, a kill by Elliott and a service ace by Chandler. After Stanislaus State stopped the run, a service error and back-to-back blocks from Lowe and Elliott ended the set.
Cal State LA opened up a 20-14 lead in the third set after a kill by Elliott, an ace by Elliott, a block by Chandler and Roundtree and a kill by Elliott and then extended the lead to 22-15 after a kill by Elliott and an ace by
Sophia Bernard. A kill by Elliott made it 23-16 and kills by DaCoud and Elliott gave the Golden Eagles the set.
Cal State LA, though, couldn't put the match away. Stanislaus State jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the fourth set and never trailed. The Golden Eagles got to within 20-18 after an ace by
Juliana Speiski and to within 24-22 before the Warriors sent the match to a fifth set.
The Golden Eagles opened up a 10-6 lead after a pair of kills by Elliott and a kill by DaCoud, a kill by Elliott made it 11-8 and another kill by Elliott made it 12-9, but that was their last point of the match.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home match against Chico State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
