Golden Eagles Bounce Back With A Saturday Sweep

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team bounced back nicely on Saturday afternoon with a three-set win over Chico State.

The Golden Eagles were coming off a disappointing five-set loss to Stanislaus State on Friday, but they started quickly on Saturday and never let up in a 25-21, 25-15, 25-13 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Chico State. No. 18 Cal State LA (10-5, 5-3 CCAA) won for the third time in its last four matches.

Emily Elliott had a match-high 20 kills and hit at a .357 percentage to lead the way. She also had four aces and three blocks for a total of 25.5 points. Zuhal Cetin had six kills and a team-high 20 digs and Samarah DaCoud had six kills and five digs.

Kassandra Nall had a team-high nine kills for Chico State.

Rachel Lowe had five kills and four blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Arielle Chandler had 33 set assists and one ace. Brooke Paige also had a strong serving match and had three aces.

Cal State LA had a 39-26 edge in kills and a 5-4 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles also served much better than they did on Friday with 10 aces and five errors. Chico State had four aces and six errors.

The Golden Eagles took a quick 8-3 lead paced by back-to-back aces by Elliott, but Chico State got an ace from Jillian Davis and a kill from Nall to tie it at 10-10. Cal State LA, though, regained the lead on a kill by Elliott that kick-started a 6-0 run that put them ahead for good. Elliott and Lowe combined for a block, DaCoud had back-to-back kills, Chandler had an ace and Cetin had a kill to give the Golden Eagles a 16-10 lead.

Chico State got to within 22-19, but kills by DaCoud and Elliott got the Golden Eagles to set point and a service error by the Wildcats ended the set.

Cal State LA enjoyed an 8-0 run in the second set that pushed a 15-14 lead to 23-14. A kill by DaCoud got the serve back for the Golden Eagles and Cal State LA added seven more points on Sanders' serves, the final one an ace that made it 23-14. A kill by DaCoud and an attack error ended the set.

The Golden Eagles then jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the final set and never looked back. Paige served for seven straight points, including two aces. Cal State LA used a 7-0 run to take a 17-7 lead and took a 21-9 lead before Chico State scored four straight to make it 21-13. Two kills by Elliott, an attack error and an ace by Paige wrapped up the match.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5 p.m.
