Golden Eagles Drop A Heartbreaker To Coyotes

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Cal State San Bernardino on Monday in a makeup of a game rained out in February.

Although it wasn't raining on Monday, the weather conditions were hardly ideal as gusty winds whipped around Reeder Field and it seemed that every ball hit into the air was an adventure. Cal State LA (11-16, 6-12 CCAA) held a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning of the seven-inning contest, but Cal State San Bernardino (24-8, 15-7 CCAA) pushed across two runs in the fifth and held on for the win.

Joel Martinez pitched six outstanding innings for the Golden Eagles in his best start of the season. He allowed eight hits and two runs and would have escaped the fifth inning with only one run allowed, but the Golden Eagles were unable to turn what would have been an inning-ending double play cleanly. Instead, only one out was recorded and the Yotes scored the go-ahead run.

Mikell Chavez pitched a scoreless seventh inning to complete a strong day on the mound for Cal State LA.

The Golden Eagles, though, were unable to manage much offense against four Cal State San Bernardino pitchers. Andres Quinones allowed only an unearned run over the first three innings and Connor Batzer, John Pfeffer and Oscar Rauda blanked the Golden Eagles over the final four innings.

Fabian Moran, Matthew Piotrowski and Anthony Angel Jr. had two hits each for the Golden Eagles, who thought they had something brewing in the sixth inning when pinch hitter Art Ruiz hit a towering fly ball to right that appeared like it had a chance to be a go-ahead three-run home run only to see the wind keep it in the ballpark with the ball ultimately landing just foul.

Cal State LA will return to action with the opener of a four-game series at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday.
