LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team had a tremendous battle with Dominican Wednesday on a cool and breezy day at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex.
The Golden Eagles and Penguins locked up in a match that took nearly four hours to complete before Dominican won the three matches on the court - all in three sets - to pull out a 4-3 win over the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA (1-7) picked up a hard-earned doubles point that came down to a tiebreaker win at No. 2 doubles and then got singles wins from Sakura Kurokowa and
Savaughna Mayo to take a 3-1 lead. Dominican (3-3) then took three-set victories in the final three singles matches to claim the victory.
Cal State LA took the doubles point after a 6-3 win by Mayo and Courtlyn Mayo at No. 3 doubles and a thrilling win at No. 2 doubles from
Hideka Takamura and Alexandra Hinc, 7-6, with the hosts winning by a 7-2 count in the tiebreaker.
The Golden Eagles got off to a good start in singles with straight-set wins from Kurokawa at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2, over Carolina Guerrero and at No. 6 singles from Mayo, 6-4, 6-4, over Hannah Lam-Troung.
Sarah Olmos rallied from an early deficit to force a third-set in a hard-fought 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 loss to Audrey Rafols at No. 1 singles, Lam also forced a third set in a tough 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 loss to Haley Garcia at No. 5 singles and Takamura forced a third set in the longest contest of the match in a 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-4 defeat to Zoe Coggins.
Hincu fell at No. 2 singles to Gina Dudley, 6-4, 6-1.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday, March 18 against Hope International.
