LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team was unable to close out a disappointing series at Cal State Dominguez Hills with a victory.
The Golden Eagles fell into a 6-0 hole after two innings and never recovered in a 9-2 loss Sunday at Toro Field. Cal State LA (5-8, 0-4 CCAA) picked up single runs in the third and eighth innings, but was unable to put together a big inning to get back into it.
Matthew Piotrowski went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while
Fabian Moran and
Wilem Drozdowski drove in runs for the Golden Eagles.
Nick Atkins also scored a run for the Golden Eagles.
Zechariah Jarrard got the start for the Golden Eagles.
Joel Martinez went five strong innings, allowing five hits and two runs, while
Anthony Diaz worked two innings and allowed one hit and one run.
Nathan Ortiz allowed only two hits and one run over five innings for the Toros (9-5, 4-0 CCAA) to get the win. Three Toros combined for four effective innings of relief.
Cal State LA got on the board in the third inning when Moran grounded out to drive in Atkins and Drozdowski delivered a sacrifice fly in the eighth to drive in Piotrowski with the other run.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday, March 17 with the start of a four-game series with Cal State San Marcos at Reeder Field.
