LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team made a triumphant return to Reeder Field on Friday and picked up its first California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles were playing their first game since Feb. 23 and, after a rocky start, turned things around in time for a 13-5 win over Cal State San Marcos. The Golden Eagles fell into a quick 3-0 hole, but scored six times in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead for good.
Owen Hunt pitched seven strong innings to get the win for the Golden Eagles (6-9, 1-5Â CCAA) and
Colby Davis worked the final two to complete the win.
Matthew Piotrowski slugged his third home run of the season and drove in five runs to lead a 14-hit Cal State LA attack.
Niko Diaz went 3-for-3 and Sean McGrew, Kyle Morrell, Nick Schnopp and Jesus Lopez had two hits each for Cal State San Marcos (6-10, 0-6 CCAA).
Kaydn Victorian-Young had three hits and scored four runs for the Golden Eagles, while
Johnny Pacheco had a pair of hits and scored three runs in the leadoff spot.
Andrew Tovar,
Nick Atkins and
Michael Rosales had two hits each.
After allowing three runs in the first two innings, Hunt settled down and tossed five scoreless frames after that to pick up his third win of the season. He allowed eight hits and walked four while striking out six. Davis allowed two runs over the final two innings and struck out two.
Cal State San Marcos took a 1-0 lead in the first with a two-out run. With runners on first and third, Diaz broke for second and stayed in a rundown long enough for McGrew to score from third base before he was tagged out.
The Cougars made it 3-0 in the top of the second, but the Golden Eagles responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Tovar walked and went to third on a double by Rosales.
Fabian Moran walked to load the bases and
Wilem Drozdowski delivered a sacrifice fly for Cal State LA's first run.
Ethan Gonzalez singled in a run to make it 3-2 and Victorian-Young singled in a run to tie it. Atkins singled in a run to give the Golden Eagles a 4-3 lead, Piotrowski hit the second sacrifice fly of the inning and was robbed of extra bases when centerfielder Diaz made a sensational diving catch near the fence. Tovar singled in a run to complete the inning.
Cal State LA added two in the fourth on a run-scoring groundout by Piotrowski and a run-scoring double by Tovar and a run-scoring triple in the fifth by Pacheco made it 9-3.
Piotrowski hit a three-run home run as part of a four-run seventh inning that stretched the lead to 13-3.
The Golden Eagles and Cougars will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.Â
