CARSON -- A short-handed Cal State LA baseball team had a long day at Toro Field Saturday in a doubleheader against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles walked 13 batters in the opener and fell, 16-7, to the Toros and then dropped the nightcap, 8-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State LA (5-7, 0-3 CCAA) has dropped the first three games of a four-game series to Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-5, 3-0 CCAA).
Cal State LA, after falling behind 6-0, pulled to within a run at 6-5 in the top of the sixth thanks to a fielder's choice RBI by
Wilem Drozdowski, an error on a grounder by
Ethan Gonzalez and a three-run home run by
Nick Atkins. The home run was the first of the season for Atkins.
The Toros, though, responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the seventh to take an 11-5 lead. Gonzalez singled in two runs in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to 11-7, but the Toros added five runs in the bottom of the inning to take command.
Julian Tellez started for the Golden Eagles and gave up six runs in four innings to take the loss. Zach Geiss got the win for the Toros after going six strong innings. Atkins and
Michael Rosales had two hits each for the Golden Eagles, while Drozdowski scored a pair of runs.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles struggled again with six walks and five hit batters in an 8-2 loss.
Trevor Baugh went five innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing five earned runs in five innings. Julian Diaz went six innings for the Toros, allowing a pair of runs, to pick up the win.
Johnny Pacheco and
Ethan Gonzalez had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.Â
Cal State LA tied it at 1-1 in the second on a run-scoring double by Pacheco and a run-scoring single by Gonzalez in the top of the sixth accounted for the Golden Eagles' other run.
The Golden Eagles and Toros will conclude the series on Sunday at noon.
