LOS ANGELES -- The tiebreakers were not kind to Cal State LA's women's tennis team Thursday in a battle against No. 40 Concordia.
The Golden Eagles dropped the doubles point on a tiebreaker and were on the wrong end of a pair of third-set tiebreakers in a hard-fought 7-0 loss to Concordia at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (2-8) was unable to string together victories for the first time this season, while Concordia (9-1) won its seventh straight match.
The doubles point was hotly contested between two teams that now have Golden Eagles as their nickname. Concordia switched from Eagles to Golden Eagles prior to the start of the academic year. After Cal State LA's
Courtlyn Lam and
Lea Rolland fell to Alyssa Zayat and Alicia Da Re at No. 3 doubles, 6-1, the other two contests went to tiebreakers.
Cal State LA's
Sarah Olmos and
Sakura Kurokawa fell to Heather Richards and Sophie Rachor at No. 1 doubles, 7-2, in the tiebreaker, while
Alexandra Hincu and Hidecka Takamura and Concordia's Jessica Bear and Tiffany Carrillo were headed to a tiebreaker at 6-6 when the doubles point was clinched.
Kurokawa and Rachor went to a tiebreaker at No. 2 singles with Concordia prevailing, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 10-3 in the final match off the court and Takamura and Carrillo went to a tiebreaker at No. 3 singles with Concordia taking that point as well, 6-1, 2-6, 10-7.
Courtlyn Lam had to retire due to injury at No. 5 singles.
Olmos and Richards had a competitive match at No. 1 singles with Richards prevailing, 6-4, 7-5. Hincu fell to Zayat at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-3 and Rolland fell to Da Re, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
Cal State LA will return to action with a match at Point Loma on Friday at 3 p.m.
