LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team finally got to play its 2023 home opener Wednesday despite chilly weather conditions at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex.
The Golden Eagles dropped an extremely hard-fought doubles point and managed two singles points in a 5-2 loss to Point Loma. Cal State LA (1-5) got singles wins from
Hideka Takamura and
Savaughna Mayo against the Sea Lions (4-3).
The doubles point went down to the wire.
Sarah Olmos and
Sakura Kurokawa beat Amanda Letzring and Arianna Audelo at No. 1 doubles, 6-2 and the other two contests went to tiebreakers. Takamura and
Alexandra Hincu fell at No. 2 doubles to Angelique Friedrich and Joelle Lanz, 7-6, 7-4 in the tiebreaker and Mayo and
Courtlyn Lam fell to Faith Pearson and Rachel Whittington, also 7-6, 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
Takamura pulled out a three-set win in singles, edging Letring, 6-2, 3-6, (10-7) and Mayo had an impressive win at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-0, over Pearson.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against Academy of Art.
