SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's
Nicole Flennaugh spent her second straight Saturday afternoon orchestrating a changing of the guard in a record book.
Last week, it was Cal State LA's career 3-point record that fell. On this Saturday, Flennaugh set a new California Collegiate Athletic Association career 3-point record while helping the Golden Eagles to a 74-43 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in the Kelp Bed. Cal State LA (15-6, 12-4 CCAA) won its fifth straight game to remain in a third-place tie with Chico State and move closer to clinching a spot in the CCAA Tournament.
It didn't come easy, but Flennaugh eclipsed the old record of 226 held by Maddy Wong of Chico State with her fourth 3-pointer of the game off an assist from
Lily Buggs. That basket came at the 4:04 mark of the fourth quarter and gave her 227 for her career and put an exclamation point on another big road win for the Golden Eagles. Last week, Flennaugh set a new Cal State LA record when she passed Kelli Kobayashi, who had held the old program mark of 218 since 2003.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 40-17 by halftime and, after a bit of a lull in the third quarter, pulled away for the victory.
Flennaugh was one of three Golden Eagles to score 14 points in the win.
Olivia Hodges recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 points and a season-high 12 rebounds and
Yesenia Smith had 14 points, all in the first half, while helping the Golden Eagles to their big early lead.
Mikayla Mabie had nine points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (5-16, 1-15 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles had great balance in Saturday's win.
Raya Smith didn't score, but contributed a team-high eight assists and had three steals.
Jada Johnson hit both of her field-goal attempts and had six points and seven rebounds. Buggs had six points, three rebounds and four steals and
Amaya Fuentes had five points and six rebounds.
Cal State LA shot just 34.8 percent for the game (24-of-69) and was just 7-of-28 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 19-of-27 from the free-throw line, including 14-of-16 in the second half. Hodges was a perfect 8-of-8 for the game. The Golden Eagles were effective defensively, holding Cal State Monterey Bay to just 27.3 percent shooting (15-of-55). The Otters were also just 4-of-16 from 3-point range and 9-of-14 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 54-35 rebounding edge and committed 21 turnovers to 25 for Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles broke free from a 7-7 tie with a 13-2 run to close out the first quarter and then used a 20-8 edge in the second period to open up a 40-17 lead by halftime.
The Golden Eagles started the second half slowly and Cal State Monterey Bay crept to within 17 points at 43-26 with 5:50 remaining in the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles stopped the run with a basket by
Ashley Orozco and six straight free throws from Hodges, Orozco and
Nevaeh Asiasi to regain a 25-point edge.
Cal State LA led 53-31 after three quarters and outscored the Otters, 21-12, in the fourth quarter.
Cal State LA will return to action at home on Thursday against Stanislaus State.
