Golden Eagles Pull Away For Win Over Warriors

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team started slowly, but kicked things into gear in time to record another big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Golden Eagles surrendered the first seven points of the game before finding their game in an eventual 75-55 win over Stanislaus State Thursday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (16-6, 13-4 CCAA) won its sixth straight game and moved into sole possession of third place in the CCAA with five conference games remaining.

Nicole Flennaugh, the new CCAA career record holder for 3-pointers, had a spectacular game, tying a season high with 30 points and adding seven more 3-pointers to her career ledger, which now stands at 234. She reached 30 points for the second time this season, both times against Stanislaus State.

Flennaugh was efficient, too, going 8-of-15 overall, 7-of-13 from 3-point range and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Lily Buggs had a strong all-around game and contributed nine points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. She continues to lead the CCAA in rebounding with 8.9 per game. Olivia Hodges had eight points and seven rebounds in 16 productive minutes as well for the Golden Eagles.

Makayla Rose, the conference's leading scorer, had 26 points to lead the Warriors (6-17, 2-15 CCAA), while Joia Armstrong had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Yesenia Smith had six points, four rebounds and two steals for the Golden Eagles, while Raya Smith had five points and five assists and Amaya Fuentes had five points and two rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 37.3 percent for the game (25-of-67) and shot 42.9 percent from 3-point range (12-of-28). Stanislaus State shot 30.8 percent (20-of-65) and was just 6-of-22 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-17 from the free-throw line, while Stanislaus State was just 9-of-17. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 45-41 and committed 16 turnovers to 21 for the Warriors.

After giving up the first seven points of the game, the Golden Eagles got on the board with back-to-back baskets from Ashley Orozco and Yesenia Smith. Trailing 10-4, the Golden Eagles closed out the first quarter with an 11-2 run to take the lead for good. A basket by Nevaeh Asiasi tied it at 12-12 and a 3-pointer by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 15-12 lead after one period.

Cal State LA then scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to break the game open. Buggs scored the first five points with a steal and layup and a 3-pointer, Raya Smith followed with a 3-pointer and Jada Johnson gave the Golden Eagles a 25-12 lead with a layup off an assist from Flennaugh. The Golden Eagles opened up leads as large as 19 points in the first before settling for a 37-24 halftime lead.

Cal State LA saw its lead cut to 11 points twice in the third quarter, but responded well each time and maintained a 57-40 lead entering the fourth period. Cal State LA led by as many as 23 points in the final quarter.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a big game against Chico State. The Golden Eagles lead the Wildcats by one game in the battle for third in the conference.
