Golden Eagles Have Postseason Hopes Dashed

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team needed two wins this week at home to have a chance at a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, but the Golden Eagles came up short on Thursday and had those hopes erased.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early and never could get into any kind of rhythm and dropped a 70-56 decision to Sonoma State in University Gym. Cal State LA (11-16, 8-13 CCAA) was eliminated from tournament consideration, while Sonoma State (12-16, 11-10 CCAA) remained in a tie for third place and clinched a tournament spot.

Alexander Sokol scored 16 points and hit five 3-pointers, extending his single-season program record to 83. Payton Moore added nine points and Kaden Rasheed had eight points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Jaylen Wells scored 18 points to lead three Seawolves in double figures, while Pierce Rexford had 16 points.

Jared Pearre had seven points and a pair of blocks for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA struggled offensively and shot just 37.5 percent (21-of-56) and was just 7-of-31 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Sonoma State shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) and was 9-of-19 from 3-point range. The Seawolves were 15-of-18 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 39-23. The Golden Eagles committed only three turnovers while the Seawolves committed 10.

Cal State LA took a 15-12 lead after a 3-pointer by Sokol, but Sonoma State answered with four consecutive 3-pointers to build a 24-17 lead and the Seawolves stretched that advantage to 39-24 by halftime.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 27 points in the second half and were unable to climb back into the contest.

Cal State LA will conclude its season on Saturday with a home game against Cal Poly Humboldt at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
