LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had a chance to be a spoiler Saturday, but fell just short to end the 2022-23 season.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 10 points in the second half and had a potential game-winning 3-pointer just rattle out at the buzzer in a hard-luck 75-73 loss to Cal Poly Humboldt Saturday in University Gym. Cal State LA (11-17, 8-14 CCAA) needed two wins this week and some help to reach the conference tournament, but instead ends the season with Saturday's loss. Cal Poly Humboldt (13-15, 11-11 CCAA) clinched a spot in the six-team tournament with the win.
Payton Moore had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Alexander Sokol had 15 points and hit another 3-pointer to boost his single-season program record total to 84 and his career total to 152, which is No. 2 all-time at Cal State LA.
Marlon Ruffin had 18 points and five rebounds for the 'Jacks, while Cam Timmons had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Kyjuan Cannady had a strong game off the bench for the Golden Eagles and had 10 points, while
Jared Pearre had eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Shane Bell had nine points and six rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 43.1 percent for the game (28-of-65) and was just 5-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-17 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Humboldt shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62) and was just 7-of-28 from 3-point range. The 'Jacks were 10-of-11 from the line. Cal State LA had a 40-33 rebounding edge and each team committed 12 turnovers.
Cal State LA got off to a strong start and built a 10-2 lead in the first four minutes. Cal Poly Humboldt took its first lead at 30-29, but Cannady erased that with a 3-pointer and the Golden Eagles opened up a 42-32 lead before settling for a 42-37 advantage at halftime.
The Golden Eagles took a 62-52 lead with 11 minutes remaining on a 3-pointer by Cannady, but the 'Jacks went on an 11-0 run to take a 63-62 lead. A dunk by Moore stopped the run and the teams battled evenly the rest of the way. The 'Jacks opened up a 73-68 lead with 2:51 to go, but a basket by Moore and three free throws by Sokol tied it with 46 seconds left. A pair of free throws by Ruffin with 26 seconds left gave the 'Jacks the lead and Rasheed's great look at a 3-pointer just wouldn't fall and a desperation attempt by Pearre after his 10th rebound of the game also wouldn't go down.
