Box Score HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team endured a rough third quarter and saw the end of its seven-game winning streak Thursday night at Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles sliced a 16-point second-half deficit to just one point in the final minute, but were unable to avoid a disappointing 69-66 loss to the Pioneers in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (17-7, 14-5 CCAA) saw its lead over Chico State for third place in the conference cut to just one game with three games remaining. Cal State East Bay (12-11, 9-10 CCAA) trails fifth-place Cal Poly Pomona and Sonoma State by two games in the battle for the final two spots in the CCAA Tournament.
Nicole Flennaugh scored a team-high 17 points and hit four more 3-pointers, while
Lily Buggs had 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals, including one that resulted in a layup that pulled the Golden Eagles to within 67-66 with 22 seconds remaining.
Nevaeh Asiasi had 11 points.
Delia Moore had a game-high 21 points to lead the Pioneers, while Jaelyn Richardson had 17 points.
Yesenia Smith scored 10 points on 3-for-3 shooting that included a pair of 3-pointers, while
Olivia Hodges had five points and eight rebounds.
Cal State LA shot just 34.4 percent (21-of-61) and was 9-of-24 from 3-point range. Cal State East Bay shot 43.8 percent (28-of-64) and was 2-of-8 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 15-of-20 from the free-throw line, while the Pioneers were 11-of-14. Cal State LA struggled on the boards and was out-rebounded, 53-27. The Golden Eagles committed 17 turnovers to 27 for the Pioneers.
The Golden Eagles nearly the entire first half, but needed a late 3-pointer from Buggs to take a 29-26 halftime lead.
The Pioneers, though, scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to take a lead they never relinquished. Cal State LA was outscored, 28-13, in the period and trailed by 16 points late in the quarter before a steal and layup by
Yesenia Smith made it 54-42 heading into the final period.
The Golden Eagles trailed by 14 points, 60-46, with 7:27 to go before embarking on a 10-0 run that got them back in the game. Asiasi started the run with a pair of free throws, then scored on a layup before Flennaugh and
Yesenia Smith hit 3-pointers to make it 60-56 with 5:25 to go. Cal State East Bay weathered the storm, though, and held a 67-60 lead before another Cal State LA surge.
Flennaugh hit one of two free throws and then a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 67-64 with 30 seconds left and a steal and layup by Buggs made it 67-66 with eight seconds to go. After a pair of free throws made it 69-66, the teams traded turnovers before a pair of missed free throws gave the Golden Eagles a chance. A rushed shot before the buzzer, though, missed the mark and the Golden Eagles' winning streak was over.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at first-place Cal State Dominguez Hills at 1 p.m.
