AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team found the going a bit rough Wednesday against nationally-ranked Azusa Pacific.
The Golden Eagles dropped the double point and all six singles matches in a 7-0 loss to the Cougars at the Cougar Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (1-3) lost for the second time this season against a PacWest opponent. No. 17 Azusa Pacific (4-1) is the two-time defending conference champion and picked to finish second in the conference this year.
The closest the Golden Eagles came to gaining a point was at No. 4 singles, where freshman
Hideka Takamura battled into a third-set tiebreaker against Miruna Tudor before falling, 6-1, 2-6 (10-8).
Sarah Olmos battled, but fell to one of the top players in the nation, Eleonora Liga, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles,
Sakura Kurokawa fell to Madison Kane, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles,
Alexandra Hincu fell to Vini Bautista at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2,
Courtlyn Lam fell to Katherine Nguyen, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles and
Savaughna Mayo fell to Katia Betancourt at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-2.
Olmos and Kurokawa fell to Liga and Kane at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, and Lam and Mayo fell to Nguyen and Betancourt at No. 3 doubles,, 6-2. Takamura and Hincu were trailing Tudor and April Wong at No. 2 doubles, 5-3, when the doubles point was decided.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer.
