All-CCAA Release
LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's soccer team had seven players earn All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors in voting by the conference coaches and announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Three Golden Eagles earned first-team honors, including junior
Taesja Paopao, who was named the CCAA Goalkeeper of the Year. She was joined on the first team by teammates
Jaclyn Orozco and
Shelby Melin.
Two other Golden Eagles -
Jassmin Ortiz and
Thaiz Hernandez – earned second-team honors, while two more –
Erin Schrock and
Destiny Moedano - earned honorable mention.
Cal State LA (9-1-8) finished third in the conference with a 5-0-6 record and 21 points and won its first-round CCAA Tournament game on Sunday in a 1-0 win over No. 6 Chico State.
Paopao, in her first year with the program after joining Cal State LA from UC Irvine, has had a tremendous debut with the Golden Eagles. She has started all 18 games and allowed only seven goals with 11 shutouts. She has a goals against average of 0.39 and has made 55 saves. She leads the CCAA in goals against average, shutouts and save percentage (.887). She is tied for fifth in the nation in shutouts, sixth in save percentage and 10
th in goals against average.
She gives Cal State LA repeat winners in the Goalkeeper of the Year category, following
Areli Reyes in 2022. Former Cal State LA goalkeeper Amanda Leal also won the award in 2019 after transferring to Stanislaus State.
Orozco, one of the conference's best defenders, earned first-team honors for a second straight season. She earned second-team All-West region honors last season and was also the Most Valuable Defensive Player at the CCAA Tournament after helping the Golden Eagles win the tournament championship.
Melin, one of Cal State LA's dynamic midfielders, earned All-CCAA honors for the first time after being one of the team's top players this season. She shares the team lead with four goals and is second on the team with nine points. She is fourth on the team with 1,244 minutes played in 16 starts.
Hernandez, another of Cal State LA's outstanding defenders, earned second-team honors for the first time after receiving honorable mention All-CCAA and third-team All-Region in 2022. She has started all 18 games for the Golden Eagles this season and has a career-high eight points with three goals and two assists. She also leads the team in minutes played with 1,620.
Ortiz, a newcomer from Cypress College, was tremendous in the midfield for the Golden Eagles. She has three goals and three assists while starting the team's first 16 games this season. She had a goal and an assist in Cal State LA's 3-0 win at Cal Poly Humboldt on Oct. 29 that helped the Golden Eagles eventually move into third place in the conference.
Schrock, a junior forward, earned All-CCAA honors for the first time after her best season to date. She has three goals and two assists for eight points and is tied for fourth in scoring. She had all three of her goal and one of her assists over the seven games to help the Golden Eagles in their late-season push for the tournament.
Moedano, another of Cal State LA's outstanding defenders, also earned All-CCAA recognition for the first time. She has started all 18 games for the Golden Eagles and is second on the team in minutes played with 1,576. She also has two assists.
The Golden Eagles, as the No. 3 seed, will face No. 2 seed Cal State San Marcos on Friday at 4 p.m. at Cal State Monterey Bay. The championship game will be on Sunday at 1 p.m.
